School data management goes online

The Education Ministry will soon launch an online school data management system in schools across the country.

The Ministry gathers school data including physical and human resources through the School Census. However, several issues have been reported with this system including the delay in collecting data, the reliability of data, and the non-availability of an updated database.

Even though the School Census should be completed by June each year, it usually takes until the end of the year. For instance, the Education Ministry failed to complete the 2018 School Census by January 2019. As a result of such situations, decisions in the education sector cannot be taken properly or on time since there is no updated database.

In view of these shortcomings, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has ordered education officers to implement an online system for data collection and management, which would be efficient and productive.

The personal data of every teacher and principal would be available on the online database. This would enable them to receive their pensions speedily once they retire. The data entering process for the database is being undertaken by zonal education offices.
