Thirteen (13) persons engaged in illegal fishing at the Colombo harbour mouth were apprehended by the Police during a Navy-Police combined operation on Tuesday.

The crew of an inshore patrol craft attached to the Western Naval Command in coordination with the officers of Harbour Police apprehended the suspects. Three fishing craft used by them were also taken into Police custody. The suspects were identified as residents of Dickowita and Palliyawatte.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Colombo Harbour Police.

Fishing along the routes that ships use for calling at a port and departing a port is a disturbance to ship movements and is also risky, and hence, it is the fishermen’s responsibility to exercise act with care.
