Eleven estate houses were completely gutted in a fire which occurred in the line rooms of the Dayagama Sandringham Estate around 9 pm on Monday.

Dayagama Police said firewood stacked on the ceilings of the houses had caused the fire to spread fast before it was doused. Police said they suspected electrical short-circuit to have caused the fire. Nearly 47 people belonging to 12 families had been displaced. Ten children were among them. All of them have been given temporary accommodation in the Tamil Maha Vidyalaya premises of the estate. The Dayagama Disaster Management Centre, Agarapatana Pradeshiya Sabha and several NGOs have come forward to provide relief to the displaced. Dayagama Police are investigating.
