Five in Rs.30 mn robbery in Pelmadulla held

Two teachers, two ex-soldiers among them:

Five suspects, including two school teachers and two former army soldiers, had been arrested yesterday over alleged theft of gems, cash and gold worth more than Rs.30 million from a shop in Pelmadulla on July 28, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

Police investigations had been initiated under the Ratnapura division SP after a complaint made by the shop owner.

Police media spokesman said that Police received information regarding an attempt to sell gemstones similar to the stolen ones in Ratnapura and after questioning the person involved had uncovered more information on the robbery. After further investigations, Police had recovered 604 gemstones worth more than Rs.15 million, 62 pounds of gold jewellery worth Rs.05 million and cash worth more than Rs. 447,000.

Police are conducting more investigations.
