WIM Maldives Chapter recognizes 29 women at Professional Career Women Awards

Women in Manangment (WIM) Maldives which is a Chapter of WIM Sri Lanka celebrated its second annual WIM Awards, Maldives recently in Male.

At this event, 29 women received the Professional and Career Women Awards 2019. The awards were given out during a ceremony held at the auditorium of the Faculty of Health Science.

Sidhatha Shareef, Minister of Gender, Family and Social Service, Maleeh Jamal, Minister of Communication, Science and Technology and Aminath Athifa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development were the special invitees while State and Deputy Ministers and Corporate Heads also participated.

Minha Faiz Rashaad, President of the WIM Maldivian Chapter said, “Equal opportunity is denied to women in the Maldives despite its Constitutional authority and polices adopted.”

The keynote speaker Roshanie Jayasundera Moraes said “Fearless women do things which the world labels as crazy, and those women have brought change in the world and I say be crazy so that you can be the change.”

Mariyam Waheeda was awarded Woman of Year at the awards. Waheeda has served in numerous State and Government positions for 42 years. At the age of 67, the mother of five continues to take part in national marathons, including a national record in April with a full marathon.

Dr. Sulochana Segera, Founder and Chairperson of Women in Management said, “WIM Maldives membership is very young. Many of the members and its winners are well educated and hold many professional positions. But it’s time that WIM Maldives start spreading their wings to other Islands and launch women empowerment and addressing Island centric issues, such as youth and family issues. Award recipients can be the mentors for these projects.”

Panel of Judges for WIM Maldives 2019 comprised of Dr Rohantha Athukorala, Chairman of the Judging Panel, Roshanie Jayasundera Moraes, DIG Ajith Rohana, Dr Maryam Shakeela and Ahmed Afaal.

The Sri Lankan sponsors of the WIM Maldives Awards were John Keells Properties, Hemas FMCG and Bank of Ceylon Maldives.
