John included in revamped cricket selection committee

Sports Minister Harin Fernando has included former Sri Lanka fast bowler Vinothen John into the national selection committee which another former Sri Lanka fast bowler Ashantha de Mel will continue to head.

The Minister stated that he had retained only De Mel and Chaminda Mendis from the previous selection committee and included John. Brendon Kuruppu and Hemantha Wickremaratne were members of the earlier selection committee.

Speaking further the Minister stated that he had requested SLC not to retain Chandika Hathurusingha as coach for the New Zealand series.

“I never said to terminate his services but to renegotiate the contract only. If the coach did his job well, I don’t have an issue. SLC assured me they would give an exit plan within 24 hours regarding this issue but they did not,” said the Minister.

Plans are afoot to appoint a high-powered committee comprising three former national players to make key decisions pertaining to the appointment of coaching staff and other related matters. Speaking further the Minister said that the ICC chairman was coming to Sri Lanka on a four-day visit and that he will be taken to Galle where Sri Lanka was planning to redevelop the venue and to Diyagama where the Ministry has made land available for SLC to build another international cricket stadium.
