Kerawalapitiya garbage dumping site exceeds capacity

The dumping of garbage at the Kerawalapitiya dumping terminal maintained by the Lands Reclamation and Development Corporation has been stopped from yesterday due to the exceeding of its capacity

According to Corporation Chairman Roshan Gunawardena, the Corporation has stopped accepting garbage from yesterday as the site has exceeded its capacity.

Gunawardena said garbage collected from the Colombo Municipal Council areas will have to be dumped at the Aruwakkalu dumping site or another location from today. He said that this garbage dumping terminal was opened on a land in extent of 20 acres for a period of one year as a temporary solution to the garbage issue in the Colombo city following the landslide at the Meethotamulla Garbage dump. Gunawardena added that the garbage dumping site constructed by the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry at Aruwakkalu can accommodate 600 Metric tonnes of garbage a day

It has been reported that a number of environmental and social issues have cropped up as the Kerawalapitiya garbage dumping yard exceeds its capacity.
