‘GMOA strike; final decision to be taken on Thursday’

The final decision on the island-wide strike to be launched by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) would be announced on Thursday, after the emergency Central Committee meeting, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said. He was speaking at a press conference held at the GMOA Headquarters in Colombo, yesterday.

Dr. Aluthge said that the decision has already been taken to defeat the destructive ‘programme’ of the Health Minister and his officials, through a strike. He added the GMOA would do what needs to be done in order to prevent the destruction of the health sector.

Dr. Aluthge said that the GMOA had repeatedly requested the relevant authorities to rectify the shortcomings and malpractices in the current health sector. “There is a severe drug shortage. A group of medical students who did not pass their G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, and some who had not even studied in the Science stream, are now ready to become doctors,” he said.

“There is a severe shortage of doctors and there are over 1,000 qualified doctors who have not yet received internships. Over 700 doctors who have obtained approved foreign medical degrees and sat for the ERPM (Act 16) Examination are waiting without results as well,” he added.
