Pallewela OIC transferred

The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) at the Pallewela Police station has been transferred to the Kalutara South Police, Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

This decision had been taken following the allegations that the officer had failed to take proper action against the illicit brewers in the area.

The illegal brewery which had been in operation in the Pallewela Police area was raided on Sunday and an illicit liquor racketeer and the person involved in selling the illegal brew had been arrested.

However, the Police Spokesman said that the Pallewela Police had come under severe criticism by the residents of the area and the OIC had been denying the incident despite repeated media inquiries being made.

“Therefore, the Police Headquarters has focused their attention regarding the actions taken by the Pallewela Police OIC and the peoples’ complaints against him. Accordingly, the Police Headquarters has directed the Special Investigations Unit to conduct an investigation regarding the actions of the OIC and the measures taken regarding this incident,” SP Gunasekara said.

Further, he added that the Police Headquarters had also sent in their recommendations to the National Police Commission seeking the transfer of the Pallewela Police OIC.

Police Headquarters had also directed the Director of the Legal Division to investigate the actions of the OIC to determine if it amounts to criminal negligence.

“In addition, the investigation into this illegal brewery which had allegedly resulted in several deaths, has been removed from the Pallewela Police and the investigations have been handed over to the Gampaha Division Crimes Unit under the directions of the Gampaha Division Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP),” the Police Media Spokesman said.
