EU to support Sri Lanka in counter-terrorism

The European Union’s support to Sri Lanka in meeting the challenge of violent extremism was promised yesterday when Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana held talks with the EU’s High Representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Federica Mogherini, on the side lines of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Bangkok.

During the bilateral meeting, Mogherini stressed the EU’s solidarity with Sri Lanka following the Easter Sunday attack, a statement from the EU stated yesterday.

She underlined the EU’s readiness to support Sri Lanka in the face of this challenge to help prevent and counter violent extremism and support improvements in coordinating the country’s counter-terrorism efforts.

Attending her fifth ASEAN Regional Forum, High Representative Mogherini, who is also a Vice-President of the European Commission, addressed a number of pressing global and regional issues.

The 26th ARF session focused on expanding confidence-building measures and enhancing co-operation in areas such as the anti-terrorism effort, strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime, preventive diplomacy, countering violent extremism, promoting women, peace and security and ensuring the secure use of information and communication technologies.
