Compensation for Waskaduwa victims after court case

Victims of the bus accident in Waskaduwa on Sunday (4) morning will be compensated after the court case is over, Sri Lanka Transport Board DGM (Operations) P.H.R.T. Chandrasiri told the Daily News.

He said the compensation will be paid through the National Insurance Trust Fund Board.

The family of the SLTB bus driver who died on the spot will also be given compensation of Rs. 100,000 along with the other allowances including the insurance claim of Rs. 1 million, he said. An SLTB bus from Elpitiya to Colombo collided head-on with a Tangalle-bound private semi-luxury bus from Mullaitivu around 4.30 am on Sunday, killing six and injuring 52 passengers.

The driver of the SLTB bus died on the spot while the driver of the private bus was also injured.

The recklessness of the drivers caused the accident, police said. Investigations have not yet established whether the drivers were under the influence of alcohol or fell asleep while driving.
