‘Arrest of MC member’s sister proves no govt. influence in exercise of law’

The era when the might of politicians held sway in the country has now ended and given way to the rule of law. This is clearly proved by the arrest of a woman drug racketeer related to a provincial politician in Ratnapura, Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Talatha Atukorale said in a statement issued yesterday.

Minister Athukorale issued this statement in response to the arrest of the sister of a politician in the Ratnapura Municipal Council for drug racketeering in Ratnapura, on Sunday.

The statement said this arrest of a woman relative of a Ratnapura Municipal politician testified to the proliferation of drug racketeering in the Ratnapura district during the past decade about which they had received a lot of information, the Justice Minister said.

Various rumours were spread in this regard during the series of killings reported in the Kotaketana area.

This arrest proved that the era of political might had given way to the exercise of the rule of law. As a government, they could be happy that there was no political interference in the authorities’ attempts to bring wrongdoers to justice, she said.

Also, as a government which had created the background to save the country from the drug menace, they wished to express their gratitude and thanks to the Police Deportment which had acted in an independent matter in this case, the Minister said.
