The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has stopped providing drinking water to thousands of people in the Moneragala District since its main water source, the Kumbukkan Oya, has been contaminated with diesel and grease.

Nearly 5,000 families in the Okkampitiya, Madulla, and Monaregala divisional secretariat divisions have been deprived of drinking water due to the issue. NWSDB officials said that it would take another five days to provide water to those affected.

It had been reported that the water of the Kumbukkan Oya has been contaminated with diesel and grease that has been released from a power plant operated by a foreign company in the vicinity.

The water provision was discontinued after the Kumbukkan Oya pump house had been compromised by the pollutants.

Moneragala District Disaster Management Unit Director Ravindra Kumar said that the contaminated water is being drained through an anicut with the assistance of the Marine Environment Protection Authority, the army, police, and the Civil Defence Department.

NWSDB officials said that the cleaning of the pump house is being carried out day and night.

In the meantime, residents of the area have begun to stage protests and have demanded the power plant be relocated.
