Remanded over robbery of Buddha statue

Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam ordered a suspect to be remanded until tomorrow for stealing a Buddha statue that had been enshrined at a community centre in the Uhumeeya area in Kurunegala, recently.

The suspect has been identified as a 56-year-old resident of Weerambugedara. He is a drug addict.

When interrogated by police, the suspect had said that he was in the habit of stealing and destroying statues that were placed in buildings that were not places of religious worship.

The Chief Magistrate had also ordered a medical report on the patient’s physical and mental state.
