Wellawatte clash leaves nine injured

A clash occurred between two groups in Wellawatte at around 10.45 pm on Sunday night, leaving nine persons, including three policemen, injured.

The clash broke out between a group from the Lakmuthu Sevana Housing Complex and a group of private contractors. The police who had been alerted about the incident brought the situation under control.

The injured including the three police officers were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital and the Kalubowila Hospital.

Investigations revealed that the clash had been the result of an argument and that both parties had been under the influence of alcohol.

Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the clash had occurred on Mayura Place in Wellawatte. “Nine persons who sustained injuries in the incident were admitted to hospital. Four trishaws, a motorcycle and car were also damaged. Around 150 persons were involved in the clash and police were compelled to use teargas to disperse the crowds.”

“A Sub Inspector attached to the Wellawatte Police who sustained injuries in the clash was admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital. One suspect has been arrested so far and investigations are underway to apprehend the others who were involved in this incident. In addition to the Wellawatte Police, Colombo Crime Division officers are also involved in the investigations for the arrest of the rest of the suspects involved in the incident,” Gunasekara said.

Six persons have been injured in a clash between two groups in the Wellawatte area.

The clash occurred between a group of construction workers and a group of residents, said the Police Media Unit

The injured have been hospitalized for treatment.

The Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the incident.

The clash occurred around 10.45 pm last night.

One person has been arrested in connection with the incident and it has been revealed that the incident had taken place following a drunken argument escalating..

The Wellawatte police are conducting further investigations.
