Governor re-shuffle soon?

Central, Southern, Uva Governors resign

The Governors of the Central, Uva and Southern Provinces have tendered their resignations to the Secretary of the President in an imminent reshuffling of governors. According to Government sources, the reshuffle is to take place in the coming week and more governors are expected to handover their resignations.

Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne handed over his resignation letter last Saturday (03) upon an official written request. Gunaratne was appointed as the Central Province governor in January 2019. Uva Province Governor Marshal Perera also tendered his resignation last Thursday (01) following a written request from the President’s Office, it was reported. Southern Province Governor Keerthi Tennakoon submitted his resignation letter yesterday (03) as well.

Galle District Group Correspondent Nandasiri Weligamage reports that the names of Parliamentarian and former Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe and, former MP Jeewan Kumaratunga have been proposed for the post of Governor of the Southern Province.

The changes in the heads of Provinces was begun recently when two governors stepped down from their positions in June, 2019 following the Easter Sunday terror attack.

The then governor of the Eastern Province M.L.A.M. Hizbulla and, then Governor of the Western Province Azath Sallay stepped down from their posts in June 2019 following a death fast begun by Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera demanding the removal of several Muslim individuals holding government positions. Following their resignations, one-time Chief Minister of the Southern Province Shan Wijayalal took oaths as the governor of Eastern Province in June 2019 and A.J.M.Muzammil was sworn in as the Governor of the Western Province in the same month
