Mirigama hooch death toll rises to 11

The death toll has risen to 11 due to the consumption of illicit liquor in Banduragoda in Mirigama by last evening.

The first death of these victims, who consumed toxic alcohol from the same den, was reported three days ago. Meanwhile it has been reported that over 20 persons are receiving treatment in hospitals.

Police sources said the condition of several persons, receiving treatment at Mirigama, Divulapitiya, Gampaha, Watupitiwala and Colombo General Hospital are critical.

These persons have consumed toxic alcohol last Thursday (1) from a local tavern in the Banduragoda area.

After consuming locally made toxic alcohol these people have been admitted to hospitals since they had sustained similar symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and loss of eyesight.

Police said parts of body organs of deceased persons have been sent to the Government Analyst for further investigations. The suspect who brew the illicit liquor has been taken into custody by police. Kotadeniyawa, Pallewela and Mirigama police are further investigating.
