Met Dept warns of rough seas

The Meteorology Department yesterday warned fishermen that venturing into the northern and central Bay of Bengal sea area from today up to Friday (9) would be risky on account of rough seas.

Issued a warning for strong winds and rough seas, the Department predicted that the windy condition is likely to enhance over the Northern Province and over the northern sea areas in the next few days.

Fishermen are informed of high risk if they venture into the northern and central Bay of Bengal sea area from August 5 to 9 and into the northern and central Arabian sea areas from August 5 to 11, as the seas could be very rough or high as the wind speed can increase up to 70–80kmph in the next few days, the Department advised.

The sea area extending from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Mannar and Kankasanturai, and the sea area extending from Pottuvil to Batticaloa could be rough as the wind speed can increase up to 60–65kmph. The sea area extending from Mullaitivu to Trincomalee and the sea area extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil could be fairly rough as the wind speed can increase up to 50–55 kmph. Temporary strong gusty winds and rough seas could be expected during thundershowers.
