STF detect port-bound refuse tea

Police Special Task Force (STF) Special Operations unit on a tip-off seized three containers transporting 18,725 kilograms of refuse tea and arrested three suspects in Mawanella area last morning.

The haul of refuse tea was taken into the custody while it was being transported to the Colombo port from Gampola for export, at around 4.30 am, STF Commandant, Senior DIG M.R. Latiff told the Daily News.

The suspects are said to be the drivers of the container lorries and they had been released on a surety bail of Rs. 500,000 each after being produced before the Mawanella Magistrate yesterday. The Senior DIG said that the Tea Board had been informed about the incident. Police are investigating.
