Earthquake hits Sumatra, no tsunami effect here

The powerful earthquake that hit Southwest of Sumatra last evening but it has no effect on Sri Lanka, the Meteorology Department said.

The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the richter scale had occurred at the Southwest of Sumatra around 5.33 p.m. (Sri Lankan time) yesterday.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties by the earthquake that lasted for about 40 seconds, foreign media reported. However, Indonesian authorities have urged people living near the coast to move to higher ground, BBC reported.Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System had also confirmed that there was no tsunami threat to other countries along the Indian Ocean.
