Fazil new head coach and Viraj assistant

Fazil Marija the well known rugby man is the new head coach of the Kandy SC. He has done a great job by getting involved in community rugby and should continue his good work. He will be assisted by Viraj Prasantha.

Cricketer Romesh Jayewardene president TCKOBA Colombo Branch

Former cricketer of Trinity College Romesh Jayewardene has been elected president of the Trinity College Colombo OBA branch. Romesh will be assisted by R. Dunuwille who was elected secretary. It is appropriate that one of Trinity’s mid 1980’s cricketers has taken over this post. When Trinity College beat their arch rivals St. Anthony’s College after 35 years in 1986, he was the player who scored the match winning boundary. His father Jayantha Jayewardene was also a top class cricketer and ruggerite.

Vidyartha keeps Gopallawa Shield in Kandy

Last Saturday in the hills, Vidyartha won the 51st William Gopallawa rugby encounter beating Ananda College by 38 points to 24 to make it 28 wins against 21 and two draws in the series. This shield was introduced in 1968 by late President William Gopallawa and he was the chief guest at the first match played at Nittawela, won by Vidyartha.

U17 cricket Kandy schools qualify

Of the 74 teams, that played in the first round of the inter-school under 17 cricket tournament, which ended a few weeks back, 32 teams won through to the second round. From Kandy are Trinity, St. Sylvester’s, St. Anthony’s and Dharmaraja.

Dilhan Kapila Silva team manager for 12th time

Former Isipathana, CH and FC, CR and FC, Kandy Sports Club and Sri Lanka rugby player Dilhan Kapila Silva, will continue as the team manager of Kandy Sports Club. In 2000 when Kandy SC celebrated their 125th year, he joined the Nittawela club and played as a forward till 2008. From 2009 to-date he is the rugby manager of the champion Kandy SC team.

Scrummage AGM today

The AGM of the Old Trinitians Rugby Scrummage will take place today at the Orient Hotel at 10 a.m. where they will elect their new chairman. This committee will have lot of hard work to bring back Trinity rugby, for which they need a good talented coach.

Kandy schools at rugby are suffering

The biggest problem facing schools in Kandy is that they have to pocket out lot of money for grounds for matches. If a school plays at Bogambara Stadium they have to spend over Rs. 30,000 as ground fees, pavilion and over time charges. After the match for treatment of players due to the hard surface they have to spend a few more thousand rupees. At Nittawela they are charged over Rs. 70,000. Out of eight schools, only Trinity College has their own rugby grounds for matches.

Baseball to be promoted in Kandy

Baseball promoters who are doing a good job, are all out to promote the sport in the central hills, for which most of the schools and clubs are keen to take up.

Futsal on August 11

The Manchester Football Academy will be hosting a Futsal football tournament on August 11 at the Futsal football court, which is housed along Gopallawa Mawatha. The tournament is for under 9-10 and 12-13 and will kick-off at 4 p.m. and will be played under lights.

Kingwood CP schools football champions

Kingswood College footballers coached by Kosala Navaratne, S.A. Weerasinghe and T.M. Isuru Maduwantha won the Central Province U20 football Championship for the second consecutive year. In the final they beat Zahira College Gampola on penalty shootout 5-4 after the game ended in a one-all draw. In the semis they beat arch rivals Dharmaraja College and in the quarters St. Sylvester’s College. The tournament was organized by the Education Department. Kingswood has now qualified to play in the all island tournament.

Ruggerites Arshad and Dimithri say goodbye to Kandy SC

Kandy SC’s Arshad Jamaldeen and Dimithri Wijetunga have crossed over to CH & FC, in order to pursue their career in rugby. Arshad one of the most recognized names in the game, was a fine fly half who played for Royal College, Police SC and Kandy SC. Dimithri is a former Isipathanian and CR & FC lock who played three seasons for the Nittawela club.

CPRFU president to give his best

The president of the Central Province Rugby Football Union Tuan Zarook Dole, a man who has been in the rugby scene since 1969, is all out to bring back CPRFU rugby to its former position. His brother Farook Dole, who resides in Australia is presently holidaying in Kandy. He played rugger for Kandy Lake Club, Kandy Sports Club and Up-Country. What CPRFU needs today is good rugby, and also they should help schools to get grounds at a nominal rate. Today schools have to pay over Rs. 50,000 for game.

Kandy hockey league in September

The Kandy District Hockey Association Gold Cup league tournament will commence from the last week of September. All Kandy clubs will take part and a good standard of hockey is expected. Teams who are keen to take part should contact M.A.M. Ashraff, secretary of the KDHA on 0777 802745. The closing date for entries is August 29.
