Some groups that were hesitant to draft laws to eradicate extremist terrorist movements despite public opinion following the Easter Sunday extremist Islamic suicide attacks, bring about Bills to abolish the death penalty, President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday.

He added however he would not give up the drug prevention programme he initiated under whatever circumstances. He also said that he is being criticised by those drug kingpins who were strengthened by politicians. He also assured that he would continue his endeavour to protect the younger generation from this menace. One 1,030 students were awarded and presented with prizes at the ceremony for their creations of poems, short stories, art, songs, dramas and short films.
