‘UGC, SLMC, ministry delay intern appointments’

The University Grants Commission (UGC), the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) and the Health Ministry are delaying the appointments of intern doctors purposely, 2011/ 2012 batch of intern doctors said.

Addressing a press conference held at the OPA in Colombo on Thursday, they said over 1,000 qualified MBBS degree holders from state universities are waiting to receive intern appointments. There is a severe shortage of intern doctors at state hospitals.

“The 2011 and the 2012 first batch completed exams and they received results on May 31 this year. But still, merit order has not been issued and they are purposely delaying the process. The second batch of 2012 should complete the final examination by September, but the examination is delayed,” they said.

They urged the UGC, the SLMC and the Health Ministry not to delay intern appointments, temporary registrations, the issuance of the intern list and the examinations.
