‘Estate children need higher education’

President Maithripala Sirisena said that higher education should also be opened up to schoolchildren of the plantation sector as well.

He made this observation at the opening ceremony of the new two-storied classroom building at Thotalagala Tamil School in Haputale on Thursday afternoon.The President said that the government has taken steps to provide facilities to all schools in the country and the right to equal education for all the schoolchildren in the country.

This classroom building has been constructed with all facilities at a cost of Rs. 9 million.When the President visited the school, he was welcomed according to Hindu customs. The President unveiled the plaque and vested the class building to the students.

A sapling was planted in the school premises to mark the President’s arrival.

The President also addressed the issue of Graduate Teachers in the plantation sector. He stated that he will hold discussions with the Ministry of Education and Provincial Councils and mediate to find a solution for them.

Governor Rajitha Keerthi Thennakoon and Nimal Siripala de Silva, Sendil Thondaman, Anura Vidanagamage, Provincial political representatives, the Principle Muththaiya Sundararaj and teaching staff, parents and old students were also present on this event.
