UNP Working Committee approves National Democratic Front formation

The UNP Working Committee yesterday granted approval for the formation of National Democratic Front (NDF) comprising recognized political parties and civil society organisations to effectively face the upcoming Presidential poll. The proposal made by the UNP Leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was approved by the Working Committee with 35 members voting in favour. Only Seven members have opposed the proposal. Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam yesterday said this new front will be formed on August 5

and the draft constitution of the new front was presented to the Working Committee yesterday. The Working Committee members have been requested to inform the Party chairman on the lapses and shortcomings that need to be rectified with regard to the draft constitution before 2 p.m. today.

Ministers John Amaratunga, Navin Dissanayake and Parliamentarian Kavinda Jayawardena have insisted on the importance of forming a broader alliance to effectively face the upcoming Presidential poll while Minister Ajith Perera, State Ministers Sujeewa Senasinghe and Eran Wickremaratne have spoken against the move.

The Prime Minister has explained the efforts taken by the party leader and constituent party leaders of the new front to draft the Constitution. Former Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar had said that three names have come up for the Presidential election. They are Sajith Premadasa, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Karu Jayasuriya He has viewed that these three contenders should join and take a decision with regard to the presidential candidate.
