Maximum security for Kandy Esala Perahera

7,000 security personnel deployed

The police yesterday ensured that the Kandy Esala Perahera and the festival of the Sacred Tooth of the Buddha starting from August 5 will be provided with maximum security.

Police Media Spokesman and Senior Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekera yesterday said at a press conference at the Kandy SSP’s office that arrangements were made for the security of the Esala Perahera - the great procession of Kandy - starting from August 5 to August 15.

He said 7,000 security personnel were deployed for the security of the Perahera, which will start with the first Kumbal Perehera on August 5 and will end with a day-time Perahera on August 15 following the final night of Randoli Perahera on August 14.

SSP Gunasekera said the police have thrown a wide security blanket throughout Kandy for the mammoth procession. The Army, Police Special Task Forces, the Navy, Intelligence officers and the police are assisting the security programme. He said the traffic re-routing plans directs vehicles travelling from Katugastota to Colombo to use the Katugastota-Guhagoda route.

“The vehicles that travel from Colombo through the Kandy city may use the same route as well. The vehicles travelling from Mahiyanganaya, Teldeniya and Hasalaka will be directed to the Lewella Dharmashoka Mawatha. Police traffic officers will be on duty on these roads,” he said.
