Shehan Wijerathna, a talented all-round sportsman hit by financial restraints

T. Shehan Wijerathna, an Advanced Level Student at Pothuwila Navodya MV in the Kalutara Educational Zone is a very talented athlete who has won a large number of medals, certificates and challenge trophies for many sporting events including Long Jump, High Jump, Discus Throw, Javelin Throw, Shot Put (athletics), Karate, Volleyball and Elle.

Shehan started karate training in Grade 3 at Welapura MV in 2009 under the guidance of G.A.T. Livera.

Shehan first won a karate championship at the All Island Karate Championship conducted by G.A.T. Livera Karate Foundation at Dehiwala YMBA in March 2011. He won 6th Dan Division Championship.

In 2010, Shehan participated in the Kata event held at Jubilee Hall, Nugegoda and won the gold medal.In 2010, he won the All Island Championship Team Kata event second place and won a silver medal.

He again took part in All Island Karate Kata event Championship organized by Lions Club held at Isipathana College and won the third place. Sheehan next participated in the Under 14 boy’s Kata Championship conducted by G.A.T. Livera Karate Foundation and won the gold medal.

Shehan again won the third place in Open 2011 Kenshu Karate International (Open) championship held at Galle and won the third place with a bronze meal. He owns lot of valuable certificates, over 50 in number.

Shehan said the most valuable certificate he possesses is the certificate where he was awarded the Karate Black Belt at the age of 13 when he was a Grade 8 student.Other than Karate, Shehan has shown his capabilities in athletics at many sporting competitions. The writer was surprised to see the number of certificates he got in athletics.

When his parents were asked about their two sons’ education, the father said, “Sir, we are very poor and innocent. We live in a rented house at Pothuwila.”

Shehan’s father does odd jobs and earns a little money. “We have many financial difficulties and sending the two sons to school with great difficulty.”

Shehan very sadly said that once he got an opportunity to go to Japan for a Karate Championship but missed the chance due to financial problems.

Yet, Shehan says he gets this chance every year but nobody comes forward to sponsor him to go to Japan.

Shehan showed a bundle of certificates that he won for Elle, Javelin Throw, Volleyball and Discus Throw. He has won many gold medals in Discus Throw and Javelin Throw events at National Youth Sports Festivals.
