Can fully defeat terrorism in short time - Army Commander

Army Commander Lt. General Mahesh Senanayake yesterday said that the armed forces can fully defeat terrorism in a short time. The Army Commander was testifying for a second time before the Parliamentary Select Committee mandated to probe the Easter terror attacks. Summoned before the Select Committee for a second time yesterday, General Senanayake said: “The threat level has gone down but we remain vigilant. We have the opportunity to defeat this within a short period of time. By 26th April, we were able to neutralize the threat. That said, one cannot entrust national security to the army alone. Everyone needs to be responsible and remain vigilant.”

PSC member Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka MP, said that he was in concurrence with the statement made by the Army Commander regarding the prevailing threat in the country. “We are with you in your thinking and we agree to it,” he said.

The Army Commander revealed that he had come to know of the intelligence information pertaining to the threat only after the terror attacks. “It is regrettable that this was not brought to my notice,” he said. “The army is capable enough to counter this threat. This incident could have been prevented.”

“Security is expensive but insecurity is more costly. We have to spend to be secure. If we don’t spend on the modernisation of our defence, we will remain vulnerable,” he said. “It maybe a financial issue but the importance of it needs to be understood.”

The Commander stressed the need to have technological advancements such as biometrics and increased border controls to counter the threat of terrorism. “We need to open files and seek information from the Grama Niladhari when we need to find information on certain individuals,” he told the Committee.
