AG did not refuse to participate, only raised concerns – PSC Chair

Dr. Jayampathy Wickremratne who chaired the Parliament Select Committee meeting yesterday said Attorney General Dappula de Livera who was summoned to testify at the last PSC meeting did not decline to participate, as had been widely reported in the media.

“The Attorney General did not refuse to give evidence. He took oath and as part of his testimony, he provided a written and oral submission where he raised concerns. Out of the five submissions, the committee found one to be most suitable and allowed the AG to nominate other officers to speak on behalf of the department,” said Dr. Wickremaratne.

Prof. Ashu Marasinghe, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran and Dr. Wickremaratne asked that all media institutions clarify facts regarding the PSC session where the Attorney General was to testify. “Most media reports were that the AG refused to testify which is incorrect,” they said.

Meanwhile Prof. Marasinghe advised the media not to report portions of the proceedings and to ensure that the proceedings are factually reflected and the credibility of the committee maintained.
