UPFA MP for common system of marriage laws

UPFA MP Roshan Ranasinghe has presented a Private Member’s Motion to Parliament proposing to formulate a common system of marriage laws for Sri Lankan citizens. The MP in his motion stresses that the marriage law should not be differentiated as ‘upcountry marriage law’ and ‘Muslim marriage law’.

The motion also seeks to prevent the practice of having more than one wife at a time, which is currently allowed under the Muslim marriage law.

The motion pasted on the Order Book by an addendum published last week proposes, “One citizen can contract only one marriage after completing 18 years of age.

This proposal is due to the fact that laws that divide the different races that live in Sri Lanka do exist. Hence especially the marriage law should be a common law for every citizen in order to rectify the aforesaid situation”.

The motion will be taken up in Parliament at a future date.
