Motorcyclist caught in road deathtrap

A man died when the motorcycle he was riding fell into a pit of an incomplete bridge.

The deceased was identified as Chanaka Mahesh (29), a father of two. He was travelling from Wanduramba to his residence in Walaahapitiya when he met with the accident.

Residents of the area said the construction work was halted four months ago. On the day before the accident, they had lodged a complaint at Marawila police in this regard.

The residents said that had the construction work was resumed, the accidents would not have occurred. Panangoda Community Police Committee Chairman Sunil Asoka said many roads of the area were half-renovated and have become deathtraps to the public. “The contract company and the Road Development Authority are responsible for this death,” he said. Construction of over 15 roads in Puttalam was halted several months ago, the residents said.

Puttalam District Secretary N.H.M. Chitrananda said that he was informed that work on these roads was halted. The work, reportedly, was halted without fund.
