SLFP CC asks President to seek SC opinion on holding PC polls

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Central Committee (CC) unanimously proposed to President Maithripala Sirisena to immediately inquire the Supreme Court’s opinion on holding the Provincial Council Elections without further delay, UPFA General Secretary MP Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Addressing a press conference at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday, the MP said the SLFP passed a resolution containing the above proposal at its CC meeting on Wednesday. He said the President is expected to seek the Supreme Court opinion next week acting in line with the CC’s unanimous decision.

He said the CC resolution was presented by Uva Chief Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayake and seconded by SLFP Senior MP Nimal Siripala de Silva. He said the SLFP proposal falls in line with Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya’s request to the President.

“The Uva Chief Minister said that he is ready to dissolve the Uva Provincial Council at anytime if all the PC elections are to be held on the same day,” he added.

Asked by a journalist whether the SLFP’s proposal was to conduct the PC Elections ahead of the Presidential Election, the MP replied in the affirmative, but added that it would depend on the Supreme Court’s decision. The UPFA General Secretary also announced that the SLFP Convention would be held on September 2 at the Sugathadasa Stadium on a grand scale with the participation of a massive crowd. He said several new decisions and future course of action of the party would be announced on that day by party leader and President Maithripala Sirisena.
