ACJU meeting with Muslim politicos over MMDA end inconclusively

The much awaited meeting between the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulma (ACJU) and Muslim MPs over the proposed amendments to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) ended inconclusively yesterday.

It is learnt that the ACJU had protest against the amendments proposed by the Muslim MPs and ministers who met last week.

“The meeting ended without a decision being reached over the amendments,” UNP MP Mujibur Rahuman told the Daily News. “As we were pressed for time it was decided that a four memeber committe would be appointed with members of the ACJU who would reach a mutual understanding and present a report by Monday next week.”

Accordingly, the committe is to comprise of MPs Faiszer Musthafa, Minister Haleem, MP Rauff Hakeem and ACJU President Ash Sheikh Rizwi Mufthi.

The four member committe is expected to meet and finalize the amendments with a week. The report will thereafter be presented to Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorale and Muslim Religious Affairs Minister A.L.M.Haleem.
