Pujith’s, Hemasiri’s Counsel complain to Chief Magistrate’s Court

Defence Counsel appearing on behalf of IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernado yesterday complained to the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that a press release issued by the Attorney General’s Department regarding IGP Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernado could adversely affect their clients’ image.

President Counsel Anuj Premarathne with Counsel Dilshan Jayasuriya appearing for the suspects submitted to Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that the Attorney General’s Department had issued a press release regarding a revision application which was filed challenging the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s bail order while court proceedings are being progressed.

In reply, Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appearing on behalf of the Criminal Investigations Department stated that state institutions are obliged to provide information in accordance with the Right to Information Act, but he was not fully aware regarding the matter in question. He assured court that he would personally pay the attention of the Attorney General regarding the allegations made by defence.

Meanwhile,issuing a statement regarding the allegation made by defence counsel who appeared on behalf of IGP Pujitha Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernado, the Co-ordinating Officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne yesterday stated the press release dated July 18 regarding the revision application had been issued under the approval of the Attorney General.
