A man was killed when police opened fire on being attacked by sword-wielding, suspected ‘Aava’ gang members in Jaffna on Saturday night, the Police said. The clash occurred when a police unit from the Manipay police station had been searching vehicles and individuals in the area acting on a tip-off that a group of the Aava gang was planning to attack several houses in the neighbourhood.

During the search operation, the six suspects had come on three motorcycles with swords and had attacked the police when the officers attempted to arrest the suspects. One suspect was injured when the police had fired in retaliation, and had succumbed to his injuries at the Jaffna Hospital, police said.

The Police Media unit stated that three swords and a motorbike have been taken into custody and that the Manipay police are investigating. The deceased has been identified as a 22-year old youth, a resident of Kodikaman, Jaffna.
