A thief was nabbed in Morawaka, Polgaswila by the residents of the area when he snatched a gold necklace valued at Rs. 120,000 from a woman on July 19.

The woman of Polgaswila had arrived on a motorcycle to take her child from school.

While she was helping the child to get on the motorcycle, the man who was at the same place along with another had come to help the child get on the bike and suddenly snatched the necklace of the woman and fled on a motorcycle along with the other.

Another woman seeing the incident had called a café owner in the road and asked him to obstruct the road preventing the thieves from fleeing.

The thieves, seeing the blockade, had turned the bike.

As returning, they had slapped the woman who called the café owner to block the road and driven towards Neluwa.

Sprung to action, a group of youth at the place had pursued the thieves on bikes.

The thieves, knowing that they had no way out, halted the bike and run into a nearby thicket. Then the youth surrounded the forest and nabbed one thief and handed him over to Morawaka police. The other, however, had fled.

The one who was caught is a 24-year-old resident of Talgaswila, Niyagama. He had involved in a high number of thefts in the area and suburbs, police said.
