Presidential candidate only after end of talks - Amaraweera

The Presidential candidate would be decided only after finalizing the on-going talks between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on the formation of the proposed broader politician alliance, UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Addressing the media at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday, MP Amaraweera said that six rounds of talks have been held so far and he predicted that both parties would be able to come to an agreement soon. The parties are still to discuss about the Presidential candidate during these series of meetings.

“As an experienced politician, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa knows the importance of uniting the SLFP and SLPP to secure a landslide victory at the next Presidential Election. That is why he has still not made any statement with regard to the SLPP’s Presidential candidate,” Amaraweera said.

Former SLFP General Secretary Prof.Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa said that the SLFP remains positive over the on-going discussions of both parties on the formation of a broader leftist’ political alliance against the UNP.

Expressing his personal views on the JVP’s move to abolish the Executive Presidency, MP Amaraweera said that we are ready to support the JVP’s proposal to abolish the Executive Presidency.

“If the JVP would submit their proposal, I am ready to submit a Private Members Bill to abolish the Executive Presidency,” he added.
