Unions at loggerheads over teacher token strike

Teacher unions are at loggerheads over the strike action initiated by a certain teacher union.

It was revealed that teaching in schools had not been hampered by the token strike launched by a teachers’ union called the “Podu Jana Guru Sangamaya” yesterday.

Teaching was conducted as usual at all schools since most of the teachers had reported for duty and the student turnout was normal. Education Ministry statistics also revealed that the student and teacher turnout was normal yesterday.

The token strike was not supported by 27 teachers’ trade unions including the Ceylon Teachers Union and the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union. Ceylon Teachers Union Chairman Joseph Stalin said that the strike was a failure.

He said this trade union action was carried to create animosity among teachers. Many of the independent teachers and 27 teacher unions did not support the so called trade union action yesterday since the strike was launched with a political motive.

Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union Chairman Mahinda Jayasinghe said 27 teacher unions are not taking part in the trade union action and their members had reported for duty as usual.
