Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday further remanded the former Rakna Lanka Chairman Victor Samaraweera, Palitha Waduge Piyasiri Fernando, and Banda Adikari Egodawela, the fourth, fifth and sixth respondents respectively, of the Avant Garde case, until until August 2.

When the suspects appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the court was told by defence counsel that suspect Victor Samaraweera, who had been remanded following his surrender to Court on July 8 ,was now under medical treatment at the Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. The Criminal Investigation Department, which produced the suspects in court, also informed the Magistrate that Saman Disanayake, Secretary of the National Police Commission, who had been earlier arrested by them, had been admitted to the Sri Jayawardanapura General Hospital on medical grounds.

Subsequently, the attorney appearing for Saman Dissanayake pleaded the magistrate to allow the suspect to continue with his medical treatment at the same hospital in case he would be remanded. They further pleaded the Galle Magistrate to issue an order be conveyed to the Gangodawila Magistrate Court requesting that court to initiate an examination on the suspect.
