President’s initiative:

Long-delayed promotions for Police cadre

President Maithripala Sirisena, as the Law and Order Minister, has already granted approval for the promotion of more than 33,000 Police officers and awaits the approval of the Management Services Department of the Finance Ministry to proceed, SLFP General Secretary and Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara announced yesterday.

Addressing the news media yesterday at the SLFP Headquarters, Colombo, MP Jayasekara said that, as a solution to the long neglected promotions issue of the Police Department, President Sirisena has prepared a mechanism to promote more than 33,000 Police officers and that the Police Commission had also approved the President’s proposal for these promotions.

Jayasekara charged that political motives were behind the delay in the approval for this proposal by the Management Services Department.

He further claimed that none of the vehicles belonging to the Police Department have been insured and the value of the damages caused to these vehicles in an accident has to be deducted from the salary of the police officer those who were driving the vehicle at the time of accident. As a result, in some cases the deductions continued even after the retirement of the police officers concerned. He further alleged that the Vehicle Emission Testing Certification had also not been done for those vehicles.

“Currently there is a shortage of police officers and an additional allowance will be paid to police officers who work in Colombo since they have to pay half of their salary for food and accommodation.” Jayasekara also announced.

Also addressing the media, MP Weerakumara Dissanayake said that the SLFP was ready to face any election and the grassroots level campaign was successfully continuing island wide.
