Grandson robs grandfather’s pension

A suspect was arrested by Galle police for stealing his grandfather’s pension. He has told police that he robbed the pension to buy heroin.

The suspect, a 19-year-old student of a leading school in Galle, is a resident of Ambalawatta, police said.

The suspect usually takes his grandfather, a retired employee of the Railway (CGR), in a three wheeler to the post office in the area to get his pension every month.

Last week the grandfather had come to the post office along with his daughter, and the grandson who came there suddenly, had snatched the pension and fled away. Police arrested the suspect on a complaint from the grandfather with Rs. 7,000 of the stolen money. The suspect was to be produced before the Galle Magistrate.
