CID records Hemasiri’s statement in nine hour session

Former Defence Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando on Monday (Jul 15) spent nine hours with officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) making a statement in connection with the April 21 suicide bombings, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara disclosed.

The statement to the CID from the former top Defence bureaucrat had been recorded from 10 am until 7 pm on Monday, the Police Spokesman said.

Fernando and IGP Pujith Jayasundara were remanded earlier this month on charges of criminal negligence as well as murder for failing to prevent the terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday. However, Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne subsequently released them on bail after observing that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the murder charges made against them by the Attorney General. The two ‘suspects’ were released on a surety bail of Rs 500,000 each last week.
