Order on anticipatory bail to be delivered on July 17

Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake yesterday fixed for July 17 the delivering of his order regarding an anticipatory bail application filed by National Police Commission Secretary and former Additional Defence Secretary Saman Dissnayake.

Police Commission Secretary Saman Dissanayake had filed an anticipatory bail application on July 8, seeking an order to release him on bail if he was arrested over the Avant Garde illegal floating armoury case.

On July 5, the Attorney-General had instructed the acting Inspector General of Police to produce Nissanka Senadipathi and seven others before the relevant court in connection with the offences they had allegedly committed under the Fire Arms Ordnance, the Explosives Act, as well as the Penal Code, in the Avant Garde Maritime Services’ floating armory case.

The anticipatory bail application had been filed following the Attorney-General’s instructions on the Acting Police Chief to arrest Saman Dissanayake along with seven others in the case.

When the case was taken up before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court; President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya, appearing on behalf of the Saman Dissanayake; told court that his client had only performed his duties under the instructions of his high-ranking officers.

Jayasuriya further stated that it was unfair to arrest only low-level officers without arresting the high-ranking ones.
