Narcotic busts in Boralesgamuwa, Mirissa beach

A birthday boy ended his special day in remand custody after the police raided and arrested nine suspects including him for possessing illicit drugs during a birthday party at a house in the Borelesgamuwa area on Saturday.

They were arrested by the Boralesgamuwa Police with 45 milligrams of Kush drug, five milligrams of ice drug, 63 cigarettes illegally imported from a foreign country and four equipment used to consume drugs.The suspects including three girls and were arrested on a tip-off around 5.30 a.m police said.

All suspects between the ages 22 and 27 and are residents of Nittambuwa, Kandana, Minuwangoda, Negombo, Thalangama, Dehiwala, Moratuwa, Peradeniya and Anuradhapura.

The birthday boy and the friend who owns the house have been remanded till July 17 and others have been released on bail after they were produced before the Gangodawila Magistrate on Saturday. The seven suspects will appear before the courts again on August 20.

Boralesgamuwa police are conducting investigations.

Meanwhile, the officers attached to the Divisional Crime Prevention Unit of Matara managed to arrest another 12 suspects including three women with illicit narcotics and cigarettes in their possession at the Mirissa beach on Saturday evening.

One gram and 170 milligrams of Hashish, one gram and 490 milligrams of the ice drug, five grams and 500 milligrams of Kerala cannabis, a drug called MDM (720 milligrams), five unidentified pills, stamp drug and 65 illegally imported cigarettes were taken into the custody by the police, police headquarters said.

The suspects have been identified as between the ages 20 - 26 and are from various parts of the island. They were to be produced before the Matara Magistrate yesterday
