Plum DPL posts to unqualified relatives of Rajapaksas’

It was revealed in Parliament yesterday that 17 persons without the required qualifications or experience in the Foreign Service had held ambassadorial and high commissioner posts representing the country abroad during the past nine years. Two of the 17 persons, Ambassadors Jaliya Wickramasuriya and Udayanga Weerathunga, have arrest warrants against them as well, JVP Kalutara District MP Dr Nalinda Jayatissa pointed out to the House yesterday.

“It is now evident that this government too has appointed its henchmen to the Foreign Service just the way the former government did,” MP Jayatissa said.

Chief Government Whip Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka in reply to a supplementary question raised by Jayatissa, disclosed that both Wickramasuriya and Amari Wijewardene did not have experience in the Foreign Service and had schooling only up to the GCE Advanced Level.

Responding to a question by Dr. Jayatissa to name the persons who had been appointed for diplomatic postings without required educational qualifications and experience in the Foreign Service, the Minister said that those top postings had been made to Sri Lankan missions in the US, the UK, Australia, Japan, France, China, India and Switzerland.

Dr. Jayatissa further remarked that the country should have been represented abroad by professionals but not by political appointees.

“It is notable that qualified and experienced officials are appointed for the posts in the developing countries while the plum postings in the Foreign Service are reserved for the relatives of political leaders.

There is no problem in appointing qualified persons for these posts. But the foreign service is used to help the relatives and friends of government politicians,” he said.

The rest of the 17 diplomats include, Chandra Nihal Jayasinghe, Dr. Krishantha Nonis, Senaka Walgamapaya (PC), Admiral Thisara Sugeeshwara Samarasinghe, S. Skandhakumar, Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Professor Dhammika Ganganath, Dr. Dayan Jayatilake, Professor Karunaratne Hangawatta, Thilak Ranaviraja, Buddhi K. Athauda, Karunasena Kodithuwakku, Professor Sudarshana Seneviratne, Ostin Fernando and Tamara Kunanayakam.
