Independent body to monitor educational standards in schools

The Cabinet has approved a proposal by Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam to establish a service institute for the monitoring and quality development of the government school education system, Education Ministry sources told the Daily News yesterday.

Minister Kariyawasam has obtained Cabinet approval for his proposal to monitor educational standards in schools across the country through a service body which will be named the ‘Sri Lanka Educational Monitoring Service (SLEMS).’

SLEMS’ main role will be to maintain quality standards and accreditation in the state school system. They will be the monitoring and reporting body of the quality assurance and accreditation programme undertaken by the Ministry of Education, Ministry officials explained.

Minister Kariyawasam told the Daily News that the country’s state school system needed a catalyst in the form of a mechanism such as SLEMS at national level to promote new initiatives and reforms to improve and advance the quality of secondary school education. SLEMS will be empowered to make recommendations to the Ministry of Education for necessary reforms to the school system with regard to their development and accreditation, he said.

An experienced senior specialist in the education field will be appointed by the Ministry with the approval of the Cabinet as the chief executive of SLEMS, he said.
