Some Armed Forces medical officers not registered with Medical Council - JVP MP

Some of the medical officers serving in Sri Lanka Armed Forces are not registered under the Medical Council of Sri Lanka, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa alleged yesterday. Jayatissa also alleged that some of these medical officers have not gone through the medical internship programme as well.

Dr. Jayatissa urged the government and the Defence Minister to inquire into this matter and find a workable solution to it.

Jayatissa made these observations raising a supplementary question in Parliament yesterday. Dr. Jayatissa’s question forwarded to the Prime Minister and Minister of National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement and Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs has requested for details on number of medical officers serving in the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force.

Minister Gayantha Karunatilake on behalf of the government said that there are 224 medical officers attached to the Sri Lanka Army, 56 attached to the Sri Lanka Navy and 43 to the Sri Lanka Air Force. He also said that “according to the documents received, all the medical officers seem to have registration numbers.” Speaking on the matter Dr. Jayatissa said that defence forces have recruited foreign medical degree holders who are not registered under the Medical Council and who have not gone through the medical internship.

“When I inquired about this from the defence forces their side of the story is that, government medical degree holders do not apply for positions in the defence forces. Thus it is important that we find a solution for this matter. It is not proper for medical officers who have not obtained registration from Medical Council to work in our defence forces.

The solution to the problem of lack of candidates for these positions is not recruiting persons with foreign degrees. I hope the government and the Defence Minister address this matter.” Jayatissa said.
