Nearly 30,000 cases of dengue up to June

A total of 27,088 dengue cases and 40 dengue deaths were reported across the country this year by July 10, the Epidemiology Unit said.

The highest number of dengue cases (5,820) was reported in the Colombo district while the second highest number (3,536) was reported in the Gampaha district. The third highest number of dengue cases (2,594) was reported in the Galle district.

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) reported a total of 1,141 dengue cases during the same period. The other parts of the Colombo district recorded a total of 4,679 cases. The total number of dengue cases reported in the Western Province is 11,394. A total of 4,239 dengue cases were reported in the country in May, while a total of 5,498 cases were reported across the country in June, the Unit said. The third and fourth types of dengue cases were reported during this season. In the past, it was first and second types of dengue that were reported. With the rains, the Epidemiology Unit has identified five high-risk districts – Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura and Galle.

People should spend at least 30 minutes per week and clean all possible mosquito breeding sites located within their premises. Even water collected in a bottle top or a pen clip is adequate for dengue mosquitoes to breed, doctors said.

The advise pregnant mothers to seek admission to hospital on the first day of fever and the public should seek medical treatment for any type of fever without delay and without applying home remedies. All fever patients need rest and they should not attend work or school.

All fever patients should take only Paracetamol. All the other medication, especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen cause dengue hemorrhagic ever (DHF) which could be fatal, they said.
