A ceremony to felicitate Left stalwart, Communist Party General Secretary D.E.W. Gunasekera on completion of 60 years in politics, was held at the BMICH on Wednesday.

The chief guest, President Maithripala Sirisena could not attend the event due to a personal matter and he expressed his regrets in a video felicitation message on the occasion.

Delivering the keynote address, former Nepali Prime Minister and Senior Leader of the Nepal Communist Party, Madhav Kumar Nepal said, “Comrade Gunasekera joined the Communist Party of Sri Lanka as a member and has risen to the hierarchy of the party, becoming a great leader who understood the heartbeat of the working people.”

Speaking on the occasion, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that D.E.W. Gunasekara was a student of politics from his youth, influenced by the powerful trade unions and Left movement and was also an ardent student of international affairs. He entered Parliament in 1986, 2004 and 2010. He functioned both as a leading member of the Opposition and the government and held several Ministerial portfolios.

Further, he said that D.E.W. held the post of CP General Secretary from 2001 during which period he was confronted with domestic and international challenges. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and consequent onslaught on the Marxist movement, D.E.W. valiantly stood by the Party’s ideological struggle. “Parliament missed D.E.W’s presence and young Parliamentarians can take many examples from him,” he said.

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said he deeply regretted not heeding D.E.W.’s advice not to call for an early Presidential Election in January 2015. Rajapaksa also commended D.E.W. for his role in the Parliamentary probe into the Treasury bond issue.

MP Dinesh Gunawardena spoke of D.E.W.’s role in trade union activities.

Several Parliamentary colleagues including State Minister Eran Wickramaratne, MEP leader Dinesh Gunawardena, former Ministers A.H.M. Fowzie, Bandula Gunawardena, Nimal Siripala de Silva and Mahinda Amaraweera, members of clergy, and a large number of comrades from Communist party were present at the event.
