The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) raided a banned lunch sheet factory in Rathnarama Road, Hokandara in the Kaduwela Police Division, jointly with the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and the CEA Special Police Unit on July 8.

When the raid was conducted, the factory was in operation and lunch sheets were being manufactured using HDPE, LDPE materials and calcium. Two extruder machines (15Hp each), two cutting machines (5Hp each), two mixtures and a hand cutter were being used for the production process.

It was revealed that this factory did not have an Environmental Protection Licence for manufacturing LDPE shopping bags and grocery bags. This factory had violated the National Environmental Act since it manufactured HDPE lunch sheets in contrary with Regulation No. 2034/34 of 2017 09.01. A production stock of nearly one tonne worth Rs. 500,000 was seized by the CAA and transported to the Dompe Sanitary Landfill Site till the Magistrate’s order is received for disposal.

The CEA will pursue legal action against the accused in the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Courts.

It has been revealed that the owner of the company is a resident of Habarakada. This factory was penalised when it was raided in September 2018. However, he had continued the production secretly and dispatched stocks to customers from the factory itself.
